Many different industries, such as automotive, manufacturing and telecommunication use CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) to help visualise their products in all stages of development, not only for marketing. CGI offers unparalleled flexibility and creative freedom. What many people do not realise is that CGI can offer substantial cost-savings, better sustainability, and quicker turn arounds when creating new marketing material.

CGI can be used at all stages of product development, ranging from prototyping and focus groups to commercials. Using CGI for prototyping is very common for example in the automotive and construction industry. However, CGI can just as easily be utilised in the FMCG industry. The process of creating a pastille in 3D is no different from creating candle holder or for that matter a whole car. Using CGI instead of spending time in building prototypes and using expensive tools, saves time and resource. Unfortunately, there is no way create tastes in CGI just yet.

Another example of how to take advantage of CGI in the FMCG industry is to use CGI for package design and catalogue photography. Even though there is a trend to minimise packaging, companies still need to create product directories often ranging in the 100s or 1,000s of entries.

CGI can create tremendous cost and time savings at this stage since there is no need to have physical access to the products to create images. Additionally, one should not forget the reduced environmental impact of not having to transport the products to a studio or another location for a traditional photoshoot. The positive follow-on effect is that once you create the images, it is very very easy to update them in the future—which in turn further reduces the environmental impact.

When it comes to brand impact CGI can often be a substitution or a complement to traditional photography, as it is not only possible to create great looking food, but also to animate it. Animated food might sound strange but is often used in commercials as you can see below.
